At our latest club meeting, Rotarian Rob Snitko shared a heartwarming message about the power of loving our neighbors and building stronger communities. Rob talked about how love is one of the greatest strengths we can receive, possess, and express. We are all influencing the people around us through our words, actions, and everyday interactions, and the people who impact us most are often those who made us feel seen, valued, encouraged, and loved. Just as children remember how they were loved more than whether everything was perfect, we too will be remembered less for our accomplishments and more for how we treated people. Loving well begins with loving ourselves well—caring for our physical, emotional, and spiritual health so we have something to give to others. It continues by loving our neighbors through simple acts of kindness, listening, encouragement, and genuine attention.
Once we strengthen our love for ourselves and our neighbors, we can continue to expand our compassion to loving our communities. Great communities aren't changed by one extraordinary person, but by ordinary people who decide that their community matters and choose to serve, volunteer, mentor, encourage, and care. Small acts of love have a way of multiplying, changing one person, then one family, then one neighborhood, until an entire community is different. At the end of our lives, people may not remember our schedules, titles, or accomplishments—but they will remember how we made them feel. Communities don't change when everyone does something big; they change when enough ordinary people decide to love well. Rob closed his presentation by challenging members to ask themselves the following questions each day: Who can I help feel seen today? Who can I encourage? Who can I love well?
